How Sven saves costs and keeps crops healthy with Agurotech sensors.
Sven Hoogland uses Agurotech’s sensors to better monitor moisture levels in his onion, carrot and flower bulb plots on song soil. On one nine-hectare onion plot, the data allowed him to skip a full irrigation, saving him over €2,200 in costs.
“We used to tend to irrigate too quickly, just by feel. Now we can better substantiate when it’s really necessary. We had another system before, but it worked poorly. Agurotech’s data just matches what you see in the field. You drill a hole, put the sensor in, and it works.”
The sensors also help him prevent flower bulbs from getting too wet, which otherwise can quickly lead to crop damage. Also, the ability to better schedule irrigation based on weather forecasts prevents unnecessary rounds and idle fuel hours. In addition, the grower maintains stable crop growth and consistent quality. Because of these benefits, Sven is further scaling up the use of sensors to control more plots.
